Dr. Ashwin Sankar

A clinical anesthesiologist and researcher, Dr. Ashwin Sankar is dedicated to creating equitable access to quality perioperative care in Canada.

Dr. Sankar examines how inequity and the social determinants of health can impact access to major surgery as well as patients’ complications and recovery outcomes. For example, one of his studies found that patients from low-income neighborhoods face a higher risk of death within 30 days of surgery compared to those from higher-income areas.

Dr. Sankar is an investigator with MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions as well as the Critical Care Pillar in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital. He practices anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital, and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto, and an Adjunct Scientist at ICES.
