Dr. Yonas Baheretibeb, Dr. Lisa Andermann, and Dr. Samuel Law will share insights from an innovative Ethiopian research project with global significance. This project, emerging from the Toronto Addis Ababa Psychiatry Program (TAAPP), addresses issues of inequity in professional education and psychiatric care. Focused on Ethiopia’s resource-limited context and culturally-rooted healing practices, the study navigates the health equity challenges to access basic psychiatric treatment. Centred on community engagement and informed by equity, diversity and inclusion principles, the authors explore the partnership between Holy Water priest healers within the Orthodox Church and biomedical academic practitioners, in creating a collaborative clinic. The presentation will discuss collaborative experiences, mutual learning and their approach to bridging traditionally siloed services to mitigate healthcare disparities.
